Cambridge voters elect Lajan Cephas as city Mayor

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – In a close runoff race, voters elected Lajan Cephas as the next Mayor of the city of Cambridge, a position that’s only ever been held by one other Black woman.

It’s a decision that 53% of voters made. Already serving as President of the Cambridge commissioners, Cephas said she won’t be hitting the ground running because she’s already been putting the legwork in, working with community members and the council on various housing projects and tackling youth crime issues.

“We have the homeowner helper program; that’s for residents aged 50 and older. If you’re age 50 and older and you’re a homeowner and if you need some help with funding so you can improve the inside of your home, or the outside, or the roof, please reach out to the city of Cambridge,” Cephas said.

But arguably one of the most pressing issues in recent months the city has faced is the waterfront development initiative.

As Mayor, Cephas said she’ll work towards spreading the work across three sectors, so every stakeholder can play their role in bringing the project to life.

“Instead of the Mayor being the sole member, this membership is being divided between 3 parties,” Cephas said.

“You have the city of Cambridge, which is one. You have the commissioners and then you have the county councilmembers of Dorchester County, and then finally the third member, it’s going to be a collaborative partnership between our state delegation,” Cephas added
