DNREC plans to demolish small portion of Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier, repair the rest

LEWES, Del. – DNREC is looking at structural safety at the Cape Henlopen State Park Fishing Pier. The last 145 feet of the pier have been closed since November because officials found that portion was not structurally safe anymore. It was built in the 1940s and has naturally deteriorated with age.

DNREC plans to permanently close and demolish the last 24 feet of the pier but wants to repair the rest of that section. The only thing standing in their way now is the price tag.

“The repairs are about a million dollars, which we don’t have and so we’re working on looking at options to see what funding options are out there,” says Brooks Cahall, the Manager of DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation, Planning and Preservation and Development Section.

Officials say they’ve done most of the engineering work already so once they secure the funding they need they can move fairly quickly. Once started, construction is expected to take three to six months. As a reminder, it’s only

the last 145 feet of the pier that’s closed, you can still enjoy the rest of the pier safely.
