Black History Month: The Black Excellence Community Fund

SALISBURY, Md. – Continuing our Black History Month coverage, we’re spotlight The Black Excellence Community Fund. Their goal is to spread awareness of local resources and expand the economic footprint of African American led nonprofits.

The fund stands as the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore’s second giving circle. Their tagline is ‘Preserving our heritage, Charting our future.’

They recently celebrated their third grant cycle which the Chipman Cultural Center, Fruitland Community Center, and Inspire One were all grantees. Their grant cycle falls in both February (Black History Month) and August (Black Philanthropy Month).

Visionary Founder Sonya Whited told 47ABC that they want to give members the tools to do more in their communities. “Bringing those resources to the forefront about what organizations are doing and what you can do to support those organizations is very important to BECF,” Whited said. “Black excellence is no different than any other excellence, but we have to be given the same playing field, resources, capabilities, and opportunities that everybody has.”
