Boys and Girls Club Cambridge Self Love Day
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Inspirational speakers, words of affirmation, and a program that focuses on self-love and respect; those were the messages that organizers at the Cambridge Boys and Girls Club were looking to impart on kids in Dorchester County on Self-love Day.
It is a message the group says the kids need to hear loudly and often to grow.
“Just encourage our kids to love their selves, to uplift them,” said Lead Youth Development Coordinator Jane’e Bass. “We just kind of pour out to them and encourage them and uplift them ourselves.”
Director of the Cambridge Boys and Girls Club, Gabe Butler, says the group encourages kids with words of affirmations: “I am smart, I am calm, I am important, I am valued,” he said. “The more they say that, the more they repeat, that more is ingrained into their hearts and they live it out.”
A key part of Self-Love Day saw kids getting the chance to get a free haircut, a free shape-up, to look good, and to feel good. Organizers say that’s a key part of the event, making sure kids know that they deserve to look their best.
“[It] encourages the kids to keep up with their grades and academics, be the best that they can be at all times, be great leaders and great examples in the community,” said barber Reggie Williams of Hair Studio 308. “When you get a chance to give back to the community, get a chance to show how excellence can be, you know, spread about in the community.”
“To see them have a sort of shape up and haircut and everything to make them feel better about the day,” added Jonas Rosser Sr of Fly Cuts.
From makeup, to ties, to all kinds of hair care the club says kids who look good feel good and bring that positivity forward with them.
“To be productive, creative, responsible citizens and including with the self-love day. It just shows them how to protect themselves and conduct themselves as mature humans,” Bass said.
Bass tells 47 ABC WMDT around 50 kids participated in the event. Organizers are thanking all the vendors who came out to help the kids feel and look their best.
