Salisbury, Md. – The Salisbury community experienced the first ever Nutterfest Saturday – an event hosted by the University of Maryland Extension (UME).

The festival’s unique namesake originated from an affectionate nickname. The organization said that for years people – the “nutters” – would come onto their property, which has several pecan trees, and would scoop nuts that had fallen from the trees across the property.

“When we were thinking about ways to engage with our community and just have an event like this, we thought, well, why not tie it to the beautiful trees and the people who have for many years been coming here to collect them. And so that’s how Nutterfest was born,” said Nicole Walker, the area extension director for UME.

The event featured live music, a food demo, crafts, and trivia. Walker said the organization’s community partners came and supported them throughout the event.

Walker said the event is a way to raise awareness about what UME can offer the local community.

“I just think it’s such a fun way for folks to engage with us to learn about what we have to offer. I think folks don’t realize the breadth of programming and what we offer that is really targeted for folks to be able to use in their everyday lives,” Walker said.
