Delaware Goes Purple For Prevention

Laurel, Del.– Saturday october 3rd the Laurel Public Library hosted a Delaware goes purple event for substance abuse prevention.
The event was supported by the Sussex County health coalition and the Delaware department of health and social services offering resources and education on substance abuse prevention as part of the statwide intiative.
Event organizer Stacy Lane wanted to bring the event to Laurel to help with an issue within the community.
“We wanted to bring the event to Laurel because we do have a substance problem but we also wanted people to focus on things that were positive,” Lane said.
Operation West Laurel was one of the exhibitors at Delaware goes purple. The organization was founded to combat gun violence and empower the Laurel community youth.
Executive director Amy Handy says there are warning signs friends and loved ones can look out for if they know someone is struggling with substance abuse.
“If you’re noticing any type of depression or patterns change, definitely reach out beacuse that could save someone’s life,” Handy said.
Organizers say they hope the event reminded people that there are resources out there.
“I hope people take the time to make themselves healthy,” Lane said.” “We just want to break the stigma and let them know we are here to help.”
Delaware goes purple is far more then just a color it is about raising awareness and starting conversations so families know they are not alone.
