Upcoming training connects breast cancer patients with peers, local resources

DOVER, Del.- The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is looking for survivors and those passionate about the cause for their Peer Mentor Support program.

The program matches someone who’s recently diagnosed with breast cancer with a peer based on their diagnosis and stage of the disease.

So far, the coalition says they’ve seen success with the program and have connected many to local resources.

We spoke with the coalition ahead of their upcoming a training session about what attendees can expect. “The peer mentor training provides opportunities to learn about listening, learn how to pick up on certain cues, and we do a lot of roleplaying in case there’s something you haven’t encountered before so you’ll know how to handle it,” DBCC Survivorship Specialist Meridith Rothstein said.

“As a survivor, I remember when I was diagnosed, how I felt when I heard with those words ‘you have breast cancer’. It feels like the world is closing in on you and you feel very alone.”

The event will be next Wednesday, June 28th at the Eden Hill Medical Center in Dover starting at 5:30p.m.

Registration closes this Friday, June 23rd. To register, email choldrige@debreastcancer.org
