Seaford intersection becoming a 4-way stop
SEAFORD, Del. – In Seaford, DelDOT is working to reduce the number of accidents happening at the intersection of Cannon Road and Wesley Church Road.
In a recent study, they reported 25 crashes and they say part of the reason is the angle. Now DelDOT stepping in to add 2 more stop signs to keep the community safe. “Convert it to an all-way stop. All 4 directions will need to come to a complete stop to hopefully reduce the number of crashes that we are seeing at this intersection going forward,” says C.R. McLeod, the Director of Community Relations with the Delaware Department of Transportation.
DelDOT will be installing the signs, however, Marilyn Porches who lives at the intersection says this simply is not enough. “We need cameras. The stop signs, the traffic lights are not gonna do any good, they just refuse to stop, it’s a perfect drag strip in all four directions. Maybe if they put speed bumps that might deter it, but they’ve gotta do something too many people have died,” says local resident Marilyn Porches.
Death that Marilyn says she has seen far too many times. “I be sitting in my side of the house, and all of a sudden, all I hear is bam and there’s no squeal in the tires, it’s just a solid bam sometimes it’s so loud that it actually shakes the whole house,” Porches explains.
DelDOT officials say the stop signs are just a start. “There will be stop ahead pavement markings in place, were also going to have flashing red signals on the stop signs. We really want to make sure we get everyone’s attention that there is a stop sign here. We’ve just seen far too many crashes at this intersection,” says McLeod.
“Please people slow down. Stop. You can’t be in that much of a hurry,” Porches pleads.
DelDOT aims to have this project complete in the next month. Representative Danny Short also shares how dangerous this roadway is, saying he himself had to make the 911 call for a car hitting a tractor a few months ago.
He says that’s not all for Seaford, a planning session is also underway for the intersection of Middleford Road and Furnace Road. A replacement about a really narrow bridge, there are actually two bridges on that road. It is in the planning stages, DelDOT is surveying the bridge, the underpendments of the bridge, crossing of the tributary to the Nanticoke, and even looking at a possible roundabout at that location,” says Representative Danny Short.
Representative Short says both of these projects are crucial as many people travel through the area. He says it will be a little bit of an inconvenience for the construction but it will be a whole lot safer in the long run.
