School Choice applications opening soon for families of Delaware students
DELAWARE – School choice applications for the 2023-2024 year will open later this month for parents of students in k-12th grade in Delaware.
It allows families to choose a school that best fits their child’s educational needs, regardless of their residence.
Once parents complete that application, they will then be put into a lottery to fill vacant seats.
We checked in with the Indian River School District who says availability depends on factors like grade level and building capacity.
Here’s a few tips parents should keep in mind. “Say your student is coming out of a private school and you want the school choice to come to the Indian River School District, you have to make sure that you’re registered with your home school or your school of residence before you can even apply for that particular school,” IRSD’s Student Service’s Preston Lewis said.
“If a parent misses the deadline, they can still fill out an application. However, they have to meet the definition of good cause which is explained in our district policy as well regarding school choice.”
The Indian River School District tells us most of their secondary schools are full, but they have openings on the elementary level.
Those applications open Monday, November 7th.
