Little League Senior Softball World Series brings in big bucks to Sussex County

The World Series is here! We're talking about the Little League Senior Softball World Series.

Monday's rain didn't stop thousands of visitors from watching the showdown take place in Roxana.

It's not all about what happens on the diamond, there's also a lot going on off the field. Over 10,000-11,000 people are expected to take over Sussex County for the tournament.

Senior Softball Director, Martin Donovan says, "We see more people coming on vacation. The fact that we play our games at night, it gives them the opportunity to go to the beach and then the softball game."

Since 2004, Roxana has been home to the World Series. An incredible feat for a small town and a big financial assist to the county. We're told the tournament brings in about $1-2 million dollars.

Surrounding towns like Millsboro and Fenwick Island are reaping the benefits.

47 ABC spoke to Joe Botchie from Twilley's Willys Restaurant who says, "When stuff like that comes in a town, it really benefits all the small businesses in a small area because they want to go out and try something now they don't want to stick where they're at."

Beyond restaurants, hotels are also seeing an influx of visitors.

This tournament isn't just making a world of difference financially, it's a way to show off the first state.

The televised championship game will be August 4th on ESPN.
