Roadside Produce Stand is Recovering after Robbery

GEORGETOWN, Del.– A roadside produce stand in Georgetown known for their fresh fruits and vegetables is recovering after and unexpected theft last week.

The couple that owns the Farmacy in Georgetown said a man pulled up and pretended to shop, picked through the tomatoes, and made himself a single quart, before stealing money from the cash box and walking away. The couple, the Cortijos, discovered this after looking at their security cameras.

“I went back and looked at the cameras straight to the person that we thought was acting suspicious. And watched it over and over again and realized that he swiped us like he swiped the money out of the box.” Owner Shawn Cortijo said.

But the couple that runs the Farmacy aren’t the only ones who’ve been hit. At least one other roadside stand in Sussex County has reported being stolen from.

“Well we did see, that within the community, there were other produce stands that were victim of you know robbery and theft. And then out first response, was definitely call the state police.” Owner Lacey Cortijo said.

After seeking help from authorities– the community has also come to support the local produce stand. Customer Jack Walker shares what brought him out to the produce stand.

“Just out and about looking for some great tomatoes. So we don’t usuallt do this but we had an inkling for some.” said Jack Walker.

The outpour of support across lower Delaware has made a world of a difference to the family behind the Farmacy.

“The community was absolutely outstanding, shockingly enough. I mean we have great customers and a great community around us and it really brought the community together for us and our fellow produce stands” said Lacey Cortijo.
