Wicomico Middle & High to Require Clear Backpacks this Fall

SALISBURY, Md. – Wicomico High and Middle Schools will be requiring students to use clear backpacks in the coming school year as part of a pilot program to increase school safety.

In a message posted on social media, the schools announced they would be implementing the new policy to enhance security while minimizing disruptions, such as checking students’ bags, to the instructional day.

“Clear book bags help improve the efficiency of school entry, increase overall campus safety, and allow us to maintain our focus on teaching and learning,” the school said in a message posted to social media. “We understand that this represents a change for our students and families. As with any new initiative, we will carefully monitor the pilot throughout the school year and gather feedback as we evaluate its effectiveness.”

Families will be required to purchase a clear book bag before the first day of school. Small colored trim, straps, mesh pockets, or manufacturer logos are acceptable as long as the
contents of the bag remain clearly visible. Additionally, the school says a small personal bag may be carried inside the clear book bag and are still permitted to use lunchboxes, but may still be subject to inspection.

Wicomico Middle Principal Jason Miller, speaking on behalf of both pilot schools, said that “education and collaboration will come first. Students who forget a clear book bag will be supported as we work with them and their families to meet the expectation. Students who repeatedly fail to comply will be addressed through progressive discipline consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.”
