Salisbury Motorcyclist Arrested after Police Find Loaded Handgun During Traffic Stop

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury Police Department arrested a motorcyclist after they say they located a loaded handgun in his saddlebag during a traffic stop.

Police arrested 55-year-old Derek Hairston on charges of both possessing a loaded handgun in a vehicle and possessing a handgun in a vehicle. According to court documents obtained by WMDT, Hairston is being held without bond.

On Sept. 18, officers were conducting stationary speed enforcement in the area of East Isabella Street when they observed a motorcycle traveling southbound above the posted speed limit. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the motorcycle near the 28000 block of Old Quantico Road and contacted the operator, identified as Hairston. Shortly after officers contacted him, Hairston fled from officers on foot before being apprehended a short time later.

Prior to the motorcycle being towed, officers conducted a vehicle inventory and located a loaded Rock Island Armory A1 .45-caliber handgun inside a holster within one of the motorcycle’s saddlebags. Officers also located a second fully loaded magazine.

Hairston was taken into custody and charged with handgun-related offenses stemming from the incident.
