Salisbury University to Host ‘The President’s Own’ U.S. Marine Band for Concert

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University (SU) is set to host the “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band at the beginning of October.

The concert is part of their larger project honoring both the 250th Anniversary of the U.S., and the historic role of military bands in American civic life. SU says the event aims to simultaneously inspire musicians, scholars, service members, and community members.

The first installment comes Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7:00 p.m., when SU hosts author David Suisman for a talk on his book entitled, “Instrument of War: Music & the Making of America’s Soldiers.” He will be discussing music’s role in military training, morale, identity, and the experiences of service members, followed by a moderated Q&A. Come back to SU’s campus on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., to hear the nation’s oldest continuing musical organization. The U.S. Marine Band will be playing a free concert at Holloway Hall, featuring a mix of works including traditional band repertoire, Sousa marches, contemporary compositions, vocal and instrumental solos, and a patriotic salute to the Armed Forces. The university added that along with the band comes a boost from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). SU received a $19,000 “Celebrating the Nation’s 250th Birthday with Music from U.S. Military Bands” grant from the NEA to support the band’s visit to Salisbury as part of their larger program.
