RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police say 11 people were killed in nine traffic crashes during the Fourth of July statistical holiday as troopers responded to hundreds of crashes across the Commonwealth.

According to Virginia State Police, troopers investigated 879 crashes, arrested 73 drivers for driving under the influence, cited 2,959 speeding drivers, issued 1,411 reckless driving citations and assisted 701 stranded motorists during the holiday enforcement period.

Officials say the numbers highlight the continued dangers of impaired driving and excessive speed during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

Emergency responders throughout Virginia also answered numerous calls involving fireworks-related injuries, brush fires and other holiday emergencies. Hospitals continue reminding residents that fireworks can cause serious burns and eye injuries and encourage families to attend professionally organized displays whenever possible.

Fire departments across the Commonwealth remained busy responding to holiday-related incidents while also managing calls associated with hot summer weather.

Tourism destinations, including Virginia Beach and communities along the Eastern Shore, experienced increased visitation as travelers celebrated Independence Day, providing a boost for hotels, restaurants and local businesses during the holiday weekend.

Health officials also encouraged residents to stay hydrated and limit prolonged outdoor activity as high temperatures increased the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Virginia State Police say they will continue enforcement efforts throughout the summer travel season, reminding motorists to slow down, buckle up and never drive while impaired.
