The Brightside: Wicomico Humane Society Connects Pets With Forever Families
WICOMICO CO., Md. — Every animal deserves a safe place to call home. In the newest edition of The Brightside, WMDT visited the Humane Society of Wicomico County, where staff members work tirelessly to help pets find their forever homes. This segment is sponsored by Choptank Electric Cooperative.
The local shelter is giving hundreds of animals a second chance to find loving families. With puppy eyes and wagging tails, it’s hard to say no. Humane Society of Wicomico County Executive Director Kim Nock said the shelter helps animals in a variety of situations.
“Lots of people needing to give up their pets right now due to financial reasons, and we’re having a lot of medical cases come in, animals being dumped, a lot of court cases,” Nock said.
The Humane Society of Wicomico County also oversees the county’s animal control services, “They do a great job,” Nock said. “I have two officers that do a fantastic job with the court cases, and we have a lot of court cases right now.”
Without a resource like the Humane Society, many animals wouldn’t have the opportunity for a second chance.
“Oh gosh, I can’t imagine if we didn’t have this,” Nock said. “Dogs would literally just be running free across the county. The county supports us financially. They pay for us to pick up any stray animal in Wicomico County.”
She said community support is just as important, “We have our community that supports us and takes part in our foster program. Those dogs are so great to adopt because they’ve already been in a home. We already know how they are in a home and with kids and with other animals.”
For those who can’t foster or adopt, Nock said there are still plenty of ways to help.
“I know it’s hot out, but these babies still need to get out for their walks. So definitely come out and dog walk. Visit our cats. They love to be socialized with. It just helps them be nicer kitty cats and get adopted,” Nock said.
The shelter is also looking for dog walkers, volunteers to help with dishes and donations. Even a small amount of time can make a big difference for animals in need. “That’s the best way to find your next fur baby is come out here and spend some time with them,” Nock said. “I guarantee you’re going to fall in love with somebody.”
