Maryland Woman Arrested for DUI, Collision on Chesapeake Bay Bridge

STEVENSVILLE, Md. – Police have arrested a Maryland woman after they say she struck rails on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge while driving under the influence (DUI).

The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office (QACSO) has arrested 33-year-old Brenda Gonzalez Martinez of Columbia on charges of DUI, driving vehicle while impaired by alcohol while transporting a minor, negligent driving, and related traffic charges.

Shortly after midnight on May 29, a QACSO Sargent was on routine patrol when a BOLO was broadcasted for a possibly impaired driver crossing eastbound on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Dispatch advised that the caller, an off-duty police officer, observed the vehicle striking the side of the bridge multiple times and failing to maintain its lane.

The officer observed a large break in traffic coming off the bridge and headlights backed up on the bridge. As traffic came closer, he was able to see an unmarked police vehicle with some lights activated dragging traffic. In front of it was a vehicle matching the BOLO description driving at a low rate of speed and failing to maintain its lane. The Sargent initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Gonzalez Martinez, as well as a child passenger.

The officer reportedly observed several indicators of impairment as well as numerous damages to the side of the vehicle. He requested Gonzalez Martinez submit to Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which she refused. Based on observations made by deputies she was then placed under arrest. The child was later released to a sober adult.
