Generations Come Together At Cambridge Community Fishing Event
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Dr. Theresa Stafford’s New Beginnings Learning Academy collaborated with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Intergenerational Center for an afternoon of fishing in Cambridge.
Children from the learning center had the opportunity to get together with seniors from the intergenerational center to receive not only tips on casting their lure, but also life advice.
Chad Green is a long time associate at the learning center, and helped make the afternoon on the dock possible.
“It gives kids in the community a chance to experience things they probably wouldn’t get a chance to experience.” Green said. “Some of them don’t have grandparents and some of the seniors don’t have grandchildren.”
Although differing widely in age, both parties got to share a beloved hobby while getting to know a different demographic of their community.
“It binds the generations for history, they get to learn different things.” Said Green. “They learn respect, value, and just pretty much friendship, as everyone in the community as a whole, and as a family.”
Cameron Pollock, the heath and wellness coordinator from the Maryland Department of Aging expressed the importance of this bonding experience, and how it brings the whole City of Cambridge closer.
“You get an exchange of knowledge and tradition and culture between older adults and younger children.” Said Pollock. “So they get to learn from elders and people who have lived here their whole lives and really get an exchange of culture and values.”
Following the success of the event, both groups plan to continue their partnership, and look to plan more activities in the future.
