Chamber Chat: Tourism’s Impact on Delmarva
SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s Chamber Chat, WMDT’s John Trout and Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce President Bill Chambers discuss what Delmarva businesses can expect as tourism season begins to kick into high gear.
As prices continue to rise, many families are watching their budgets closely. Bill tells WMDT that financial concerns will certainly play a role in how many families choose to engage in summer travels.
“Higher gas prices, lodging, restaurant prices will cause travelers to book later or adjust how much they spend once they arrive at their destinations,” Bill elaborates. “So look for shorter trips if you’re looking for deals, but the important thing is it looks like most people will be wanting to travel.”
Yet, amidst rising costs associated with summer travels, Delmarva remains a popular spot for tourists seeking beaches. Additionally, because the peninsula is within driving distance of major metro areas like Baltimore,Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, families can plan a trip without the expense of airfare.
Bill also chatted with us about a new term that economists have dubbed the “K-shaped travel season.”
“What we’re seeing is middle and higher income households continuing to spend freely on vacations, dining and entertainment, while lower income families unfortunately will have to cut back and travel less,” Bill explains. “So tourism spending may look a little bit different this summer depending on the market.”
As Delmarva remains one of the East Coast’s most popular regional destinations, Bill says he’s confident that we can expect another strong tourism season.
