Teachers Who Make a Difference: A special education teacher teaches important life lessons

SALISBURY, Md. This month’s Teachers Who Make a Difference highlights Paiton Zanette, a self-contained special education teacher at Parkside High School, who is ensuring her students graduate with important life lessons. Sponsored by Pam Price and Associates.

“I’m overwhelmed. I didn’t expect this. I didn’t even know it was a thing, to be honest with you, so I feel very emotional about it,” Zanette said. “I love what I do. I absolutely love it. The kids are amazing.”

Zanette, who has taught at Parkside High for four years, drew inspiration from her mother, a special education assistant.

“I’ve been a private caregiver for special needs for 14 years, and I volunteered for the Special Olympics for 10 years when we still had that,” Zanette said.

Her love for helping others shapes her approach to teaching, ensuring that each student receives the support they need.

“These kids, they just know what to say. They know what to do, and they’re just happy about life. I will always vouch for our friends. They are the best workers you’ll ever have,” she said.

Zanette is especially proud of her students’ accomplishments. This week, they’ve been learning about plants and the process of photosynthesis.

“These students are learning the word ‘photosynthesis’ and are making connections with oxygen,” she said.

With students also preparing for classes at Wor-Wic Community College and potential job opportunities on the Eastern Shore, Zanette stresses the importance of community support.

“Just be accepting, be patient, and be kind. They may take a little bit longer, but they can do it. They will do it, and they will constantly surprise you. They surprise me every day,” Zanette said.
