Cooking with Lynn: Getting the family involved in gardening

SALISBURY, Md. – 47 ABC is bringing more snack and food ideas from Lynn Matava, a nutrition educator with the University of Maryland Extension’s Snap Ed program.

Today, Lynn is showing us how to get your children involved in learning about gardening, plus she has a special guest to tell us more ways to get the entire family involved.

One way to get your kids involved in gardening while making it fun is to make an edible garden on a plate. Lynn shows us how to do that by first using chopped up carrots to make a raised “garden bed”, then adding hummus and corn to represent your seeds and show how you need space for plants to grow. She then adds broccoli to show how seeds “sprout”, and shredded cheese to represent mulch and how it’s important to keep weeds out in a garden. She also adds salsa to represent water and how important it is to water your garden to ensure that your plants grow and remain healthy.

Mark Thompson with the Wicomico County Board of Education also joined the segment to talk about websites families can use to find recipes and tips on eating healthy and getting the entire family involved.

Two websites Thompson recommends are Cooking Matters and Eat Smart.

“I encourage families now that school’s over to go on these websites to come up with creative ways to get families working together, cooking together in the kitchen, have fun with different cooking instruments in the kitchen, just bring your families in,” Thompson said.
