Easton homeless shelter will stay on Goldsborough Street, despite neighbors’ concerns

Despite backlash from nearby neighbors, a homeless shelter in Easton will continue to be open to those without a home.
A Talbot County District Court judge ruled in favor of the Talbot Interfaith Shelter on Friday.
The group opened its doors on residential Goldsborough Street last November. However, some neighbors were worried that having the shelter so close would be unsafe and could drive down the value of their properties, so they took their concerns to court.
Shelter staff say they’re relieved with the outcome.
“This is perfect to do the work we want to do, to help people get back on their feet,” says Julie Lowe, executive director of the Talbot Interfaith Shelter. “I actually think the neighbors are starting to realize that it is a good place to do this kind of work, and that we are going to be good neighbors and that it would be a good feature in the community.”
Lowe says over the last three months, they have been able to house 1,300 people spread among the Goldsborough Street location and others in the county. She says they expect costs to triple in the upcoming years , and they are in need of donations.
