Georgetown PD receives drug collection unit

The town of Georgetown has a new outlet for getting rid of old prescription drugs.
CVS pharmacy awarded the town with a drug collection unit. It’s in the lobby of the Georgetown Police Department.
Law enforcement tell 47 ABC the goal is to reduce the amount of unneeded medicines in homes and cut down on prescription drug abuse.
They believe this unit will provide a safe place for residents to dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired medication, as well as controlled substances without the threat of punishment.
Lt. Lawrence Grose with the Georgetown Police Department says, “There’s no prosecutorial action going to be taken. They walk in, drop in the box, and leave. We don’t even ask their name. They don’t have to sign anything. That’s it.”
Town officials say this unit will also prevent the contamination of local landfills and water supplies from unused medication.
Residents in Georgetown can drop off medicines at the police department Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
