The extreme cold and the possibility of snow this week is posing a threat to local residents in the area. The Wicomico County Health Department is reminding residents that they can find resources to help with issues caused by the cold by dialing 2-1-1. The service will connect callers to local resources that are available to people who don't have heat or who are homeless. 2-1-1 can be called by anyone at any time.Trained specialists will provide assistance for dealing with challenges such as housing and utility shutoffs.
"Cold is a dangerous situation especially when it goes on for days and days and we just want people to be aware that this is resource is available to them so that they can connect with the other resources that will actually help them get the services they need," said Director of Prevention and Health Communication Cara Rozaieski.
Other actions people can take to stay safe during the extreme cold is to make sure you never use ovens or grills to heat the inside of your homes.Official also recommend that if you know of someone who is elderly and lives alone, to check in on them daily to ensure that they have what they need to survive the cold.
