DSP advise drivers to not leave unattended idle cars during the cold

With those cold temperatures on our radar, some people tend to leave their cars running unattended while idle, in order to keep their cars warm.

But it’s actually against the law in the state of Delaware and Maryland.

Both states require those laws to secure your car properly. In the first state, you can be fined up to $75 and in Maryland you can be slapped with a $70 fine.

We're told this gives thieves the ability to snatch your car easier.

47 ABC spoke to Delaware State Police to give some tips on how to avoid those hefty costs. We're told if you want to heat your car up, maintain an eye on it. Or try to heat up you car when it's time to scrape off the windshield.

We’re told cars need about 30 seconds of warming up before they are ready to drive.

After that, the best way to increase the engine's temperature is by actually driving your car.

In Virginia, they do not have a law in regards to leaving your car unattended while idle, but we do advise you to be safe.
