“We want to call it out and we would like truth:” MD Dem. Central Committees pushing to see leaders, like Rep. Andy Harris, held accountable
MARYLAND- This week the Democratic Central Committees of Maryland’s First Congressional District sent a letter to the Maryland Democratic Congressional delegation in hopes of doing what they said is protecting the integrity of democracy.
“We felt like something needed to be said and it couldn’t be said with just one or two central committees it had to be said by the district as a whole,” Patrick Firth, Chair of Talbot County Democratic Central Committee, said.
Committees I spoke with said after the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol building various leaders of the Republican Party, who many political observers feel instigated the recent siege, should be held accountable, like former President Donald Trump and Congressman Dr. Andy Harris.
They added that some of these leaders did not accept the results of the 2020 election, which resulted in violence.
“Those individuals were invited to participate by the individuals that supported the rhetoric and the propaganda to somehow indict that this election, where a historic number of Americans cast their vote, was false,” Crystal Francis, Chair of Baltimore County Democratic Central Committee, said.
I am told by sending this letter committees hope the Democratic delegation will explore options to ensure accountability.
“That can be in the form of congressional censure, formal expulsion from the chamber, or stripping of committee assignments,” Firth said.
Congressman Harris responded to 47 ABC with a statement:
“This is yet another partisan political stunt by the desperate cancel culture Democrats who can’t win at the ballot box. Their continued disregard for the will of the voters in the First Congressional District, who voted to send me back to represent them in Washington by an overwhelming margin just over two months ago, is shameful. Maybe that’s why they continue to lose in local, state, and federal races,” Congressman Harris, said.
Democratic committee chairs added- that while they hope the actions of some of these leaders don’t get pushed under the rug, they also want to make sure incidents like this don’t happen again.
“Perhaps it took this crisis to have us say okay, okay that’s a step too far, lets go back and lets figure out who we are as Americans,” Sarah Gavian, Chair of the Dorchester County Democratic Central Committee, said.
Firth said the Democratic committees are not going away, and they are going to keep holding Congressman Harris accountable for his actions and his inaction.
