Trial for accused rapist and murderer delayed

The bond hearing and criminal trial for Matthew Burton, a Dagsboro man accused of raping and murdering Millsboro woman Nicole Bennett, have been delayed again.

Burton’s proof positive bond hearing was supposed to happen January 18; however, 47 ABC has confirmed it is now scheduled for April.

The murder trial and jury selection has likewise been pushed back from April 11 to early October.

47 ABC contacted the Delaware Attorney General’s office to find out why there is yet another postponement. A spokesperson replied that they have no comment.

It has been just over three and a half years since the murder of Nicole Bennett and, we have been closely following this case since that time.

Her family tells us they are frustrated to hear of this latest delay. Bennett’s parents shared their disappointment with us during an exclusive sit-down interview over the holidays, which is the first time they have spoken to the media since their daughter was killed.

The interview is expected to air in February on 47ABC.
