DelDot app allows users to track snow plows

Thanks to a new feature from DelDot’s mobile app driving may become much easier during a winter storm.

We’re told Deldot’s Snow Plow Tracker gives Delaware residents an eye in the sky to see when and where plows are clearing snow and ice.

“I think it’ll be great for them to see how Deldot is working, where the trucks are being deployed,” DelDot spokesperson Jim Westhoff told 47 ABC, “people can see where our plows are in real time.”

DelDot says that GPS sensors have been installed on all of their 330 plows and idle trucks for more than than 10 minutes disappear from the map to avoid confusion.

The feature cost just over $22,000 and is only activated during winter storms. It was designed to give those in the first state a closer look at how DelDot uses their resources.

Jim Westhoff tells 47 ABC that the tracker is just as effective for the department of transportation as it is for Delawareans.

“It helps us keep track of where all the plows are and what roads are being worked on,” said Westhoff, “It helps us know where our drivers are, especially if there’s ever a problem. (If) A driver gets stuck or there is an accident, we’ll know exactly where the vehicles are,”

To access the feature, download DelDot’s app in the Google Play or Apple App store. Then select the traffic map and turn on the snow plow layer. If there’s snow falling which might be the case later this week you’ll be able to see all of the plows DelDot has clearing the roads.

In addition to using Deldot’s app to help you navigate delaware roadways, the department of transportation is encouraging you to continue the tried-and-true lower tech strategies for safe winter living.

For example, stock your vehicle with a winter prep kit with items like blankets, flares, and bottled water could be a life-saver if you’re stranded in a storm. Also, stock up on the groceries.

If you’re aware that a winter storm is coming get everything you need beforehand to avoid the hazardous conditions altogether.

DelDot spokesperson Jim Westhoff tells us above all else, give yourself some time.

“If you’re driving on roads with any snow or ice, give yourself about twice the amount of time it takes you to stop or turn or anything. Just give yourself a lot of extra time,”
