Staying safe while weathering the storm

the weather is 47 abc’s colin bradley. how are you holding up out there colin? answer how are you holding up – as you can see its snowing pretty good at this point. as we bunker down for winter storm jonas – snow crews are doing their best to clear the roads – and emergency crews are doing all they can to ensure that people are safe over the weekend. i stopped in the emergency room here at prmc earlier today to see how they were preparing for the storm and although they’re ready for anything 24-7 – they told me what they can expect due to the storm. the storm is here – people have already stocked up on groceries and made preparations. now the main focus – to stay safe. doctor harry emmerich of peninsula regional medical center says it’s not just about your safety. 19.00.42 so we encourage people to really you know to not only look out for themselves but also look out for individuals around them whether its elderly individuals – neighbors – friends – you know to make sure that not only their safe but also the people around them as well.19.00.55 and that’s exactly what ryan weaver and his family are doing. 19.18.08 we’re just trying to make sure we’re taking care of our neighbors – just trying to make sure everybody around us is safeand well and we just took a drive to see how things are going – and our city is on top of it the city employees are outstanding.19.18.21 and dr. emmerich said that the most common injuries he expects to see during the course of the storm are broken bones from slips – minor car accidents – but also people injuring themselves shoveling. injuries can range from throwing out your back – to frostbite – and in some cases a heart attack. 19.01.06 it’s more of a problem particularly for people who do not exercise on a regular basis – so you know if you’re stagnant for 11.5 months out of the year and we have a snowstorm – and you expect to go out and shovel your driveway in 45 minutes – they’re the folks that are more likely to have heart attacks because they’re not used to the amount of exertion that it takes to move that much snow 19.01.25 to avoid injury – dr. emmerich gave 47abc some tips for staying safe if you must shovel 19.23.55 so before you do any type of shoveling you want to warm up before you go outside make sure you get your gloves and hat on before you do – the shovel i have here is a small one but that’s actually better because it’s less lifting that you have to do – and when you’re actually shoveling – you want to push the snow – and again not lift it – and do anything you can to decrease your chances of ending up in the hospital. 19.24.13 we caught up with one resident who was shoveling outside – doing all the right things. 19.20.57 yeah just all the normal precautions to stay safe out here 19.21.01 the biggest problem prmc is facing – is major trauma that would require a transfer to baltimore or johns hopkins. the helicopter cannot fly in these conditions so that turns a quick transfer into a potentially dangerous drive on these roads. that is why officials are asking people to stay off the roads unless you absolutely need to – this will leave the road to emergency vehicles. at peninsula regional medical center – colin bradley – 47abc. alright, thanks colin – stay warm out there. that’s 47 abc’s colin bradley reporting live in salisbury tonight. and staying on the topic of this winter storm – it’s important to keep in mind our pets as
