Homeowner tips to avoid flooding damage

This spring we were close to drought conditions but thanks to recent rain we're actually at a surplus. That's good news for farmers and their crops, but the recent showers have brought more bad than good.
Rain this past weekend caused flash floods in Wicomico County with some houses even taking on water. Although, there are tips to help homeowners lower their chances for flood damage.
"One inch of water can cause $20,000 worth of damage."
A shocking statistic from FEMA and unfortunately here on the shore flooding is all too common.
"We're in a low lying area so it doesn't take a whole lot for it to be devastating," explains Frank Willing, owner of Paul Davis Restoration.
Willing has seen the damage first hand and he knows how overwhelming it can be for a homeowner. But he does have some tips on how to mitigate losses when the forecast calls for heavy rain.
"I would say keeping your gutters cleaned out and your crawl space hatches, make sure they are sealed up properly and vents are closed in your crawl spaces. Little common sense things like that."
Willing also says homeowners should check their storm drains by their homes to make sure they aren't clogged because that too can add to flood damage.
But he says flood insurance is the only sure fire way to guarantee the damage won't break the bank. Adding that flood damage usually isn't covered by regular home insurance, something many aren't aware of.
"Unfortunately with what I do I see it's pretty devastating, a lot of people don't have it and it's unfortunate you feel helpless. It can devastate you financially so make sure you have flood insurance."
Willing also has tips for homeowners when they are hit with flood damage
"They should use a certified firm to do any type of work related to floods. Those guys are trained and certified by the agency that tells you how to do it properly so to prevent other causes from floods like mold and health concerns."
He says to get the water away from the property as quick as you can.
