25-Year-Old Killed in Car Crash on Chincoteague Causeway

CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. – The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal, two-vehicle crash that killed one on Sunday night.

At 10:17 p.m. on the Route 175 Chincoteague Causeway, police say a 2000 Ford Explorer was travelling east in the westbound lane when it struck a 2014 Toyota Camry heading west. The impact sent the Ford over the jersey wall and into the marsh.

Police say the driver of the Ford, identified as 25-year-old Tyler W. Crockett of New Church, died at the scene. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Chincoteague and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission responded to search for and recover the victim.

The driver of the Camry suffered minor injuries.

In a message posted to social media, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company said units eventually left the scene at 2:50 a.m. after clearing the roadway and removing the crashed vehicle.
