Petition out to remove Georgetown monument and confederate flag
GEORGETOWN, DE.- A monument and confederate flag in Georgetown are causing some discussion across Delaware, especially after one man started a petition to get them removed.
“Frankly I just didn’t think there was a place in our State for any commemoration or glorification of treason and racism, I felt there was a need to bring it down,” Andrew Honeycutt, creator of the petition, said.
The Delaware Grays’ Sons of Confederate Veterans installed this monument outside the Nutter Marvel Carriage Museum back in 2007.
But now, Honeycutt, has started a petition to take it down.
“Just because it’s history doesn’t mean we need to show it off and flaunt it like it’s something to be proud of,” Honeycutt said.
But not everyone is on board with removing the monument.
One user chimed in on Facebook and said in part quote, “As veterans, they deserve the respect just like any other veteran.”
We spoke to one woman who said while she supports the petition, she feels removing the monument altogether isn’t necessarily going to solve any problems or change history.
“I don’t really think it’s going to change the fabric of what is wrong and that is the legacy of slavery, and the fact that reparations have not been addressed, Olivia Faison, a visitor, said.
But both Honeycutt and Faison feel that putting that history inside a museum would be the better option.
“Take them down, move them to the museum because they are there to represent a world and a legacy that we questioned and many of us don’t accept,” Faison said.
We reached out to Georgetown’s town manager for his response on this and he said since the monument is on private property it is not up to the town to remove it. He also said “We encourage all parties to work in a spirit of cooperation in addressing any concerns.”
