Community honors memory of Ben Layton with a virtual race
SALISBURY, Md. – People in the community strapped on their shoelaces and hit the pavement this weekend for the 15th Annual Ben Layton 5K and it was all for a good cause.
This year the event was held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Many runners sent pictures of themselves participating in the 5K.
Money raised during the event will go towards the maintenance of the playground Ben’s Red Swings in Salisbury as well as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The playground honors the memory of Ben Layton, a four-year-old boy who died from leukemia back in 2002.
“With everything going on still right now, we need to recognize that our community can get together and support the things that are important to us and we’ve been really pleased with the measure of support that we’ve seen,” said Katherine Layton, event organizer.
Katherine Layton says they’ve been able to raise about 6,000 dollars this year in support of Ben’s Red Swings and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
