“Very strange summer for these kids”: Salisbury camp director on new restrictions

SALISBURY, Md. -Mitchell’s Martial Arts  in Salisbury is preparing to start it’s summer camp program on June 15th but they say some of the restrictions put them in a tough situation.

Maryland summer camps have to limit each group to no more than 10 people including staff, based on capacity. That means the new ratio will be nine kids to one staff member. So Camp Phoenix says they will have about 100 kids enrolled for phase one. They also say social distancing will be challenging because of the nature of kids and they’re concerned about not being able to take field trips.

“I mean we go swimming every Friday and we can’t do that. The number of kids in the pool is limited. This is going to be a very very strange summer for these kids,” says Justin Garner, the executive director of Camp Phoenix.

Per state guidelines everyone has to wear a mask, they have to do daily COVID-19 symptom checks and no out-of-state or overnight campers are allowed.
