Search for Worc. Superintendent: Michael Martirano

The search for the next superintendent in Worcester County continues. The Board of Education has narrowed it down to two finalists. On Monday, 47 ABC met wit Louis Taylor, and Tuesday we met with Matt Martirano.
“I spent many years as a science and math teacher, as a principal, assistant principal at all three levels. I understand curriculum, pedagogy, and what it takes to get good grades for kids,” says Martirano.
For years Martirano worked as an educator in multiple districts in Maryland. He says one of his proudest moment was raising the graduation rate over the course of his nine year tenure at St. Mary’s County.
“When I started there it was in the low 80’s, when I left it was in the low 90’s,” says Martirano.
Martirano is now the superintendent for the state of West Virginia, but his wish is to one day return to Maryland.
“I made a list of school districts that I thought maybe one day I would like to work in and Worcester County is always on that list, I’ve always been impressed with the leadership in Worcester County,” says Martirano.
Martirano tells 47 ABC if he is chosen, he already has a plan in mind, which he calls ‘The Worcester County Public Schools Vision Plan Where Students Sail to New Horizons’.
“That indicates and acknowledged the successes in the past but gives us an opportunity to look for areas of improvement and takes us to next levels of greatness,” says Martirano.
Martirano tells us his plan will focus on four things: Improving Instruction, having a safe and orderly environment for students, revising current programs in place, and community engagement. He tells 47 ABC if chosen, he knows it will take a team effort.
“When you have a superintendent, a board of education, and a county commission group working together wonderful things start happening for children,” says Martirano.
Board officials tell us they hope to make their decision by October, whoever it is, will be expected to begin by July of next year.
