Apr. 12 – CyberTechnology Pathways Across Maryland Grant

Wor-Wic was one of 14 community colleges to receive the CyberTechnology Pathways Across Maryland grant in October 2014. The grant is worth 15 million dollars over four years and is aimed at training the workforce needed to fight cybercrime as well as for myriad technology jobs that go unfilled because of a lack of skilled workers.

Wor-Wic’s $800K portion of the grant funds new equipment including our new state-of-the-art PCs, new servers, racks, switches and other hardware, as well as renovations for our new lab space that will open in the fall. In addition, the grant supports my position as the Career Navigator.

Wor-Wic’s computer studies department offers degrees and certifications in two different tracks. One is the computer and network support track, for students who seek jobs in networking, hardware, helpdesk and information security type positions. The other is our new web development program which is for students who seek jobs in website design and development. We also have a transfer degree program available for students who want to further their computer science studies at a four year institution.

As career navigator I serve three functions. I recruit new students into our programs, and I advise current students regarding their courses and finding internships and jobs. Finally, I work with businesses in the local community to identify partnerships, whether it’s for internships or jobs for our graduates.
