New Historical Marker Honors Greenwood School 222-C

GREENWOOD, Del.- The Delaware Public Archives unveiled a new state of Delaware historical marker on Friday recognizing Greenwood school 222-C, which served African American children during the era of segregated education.

The school, built in 1922, provided elementary education until it closed in 1962.

Maegan Peterman, director and state archivist for the Delaware Public Archives, said the marker allows people to connect with the site’s history.

“The cool thing about a marker is that it allows you to see a bit of history when you’re not actually in the archives building,” Peterman said. “The marker allows you to experience history in the place where it originally happened.”

For more than 40 years, Greenwood School 222-C educated generations of children while also serving as a gathering place for community activities. The historical marker honors the school’s legacy and recognizes its contributions to education in Delaware.
