Cambridge Prepares for Winter Storm and Ice
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The plows at Cambridge Public Works are ready for whatever falls on the eastern shore in this winter storm. However, the city and some local drivers are also urging people to exercise caution as we deal with not only the snow but ice on the roads as well.
Cambridge declared a snow emergency Friday in anticipation of the winter storm.
City Manager Glenn Steckman walked us through their plans for treating the roads as we deal with a mix of snow and freezing rain.
He says, “There are four major snow routes that we clean, and that is with our heavier dump trucks. And then we’ll use some F350s with plows to do some of our smaller streets.”
Those apply to the snowfall, but not what the entire winter storm is bringing to the Eastern Shore.
With the city bracing for anywhere from a quarter inch to a half an inch of ice on the roads, it creates a very dangerous situation; even for those plowing the roads.
“Well, first of all, you know, you can’t plow ice. So now you’re heavily salting to get the ice to melt, and then maybe the plows can pull up sheets,” says Steckman.
“There are no good drivers on ice. Because you, you know, you face a complete loss of control. Inability to break, inability to, you know, slow down or stop or even steer,” says Drive on Time Driving School Owner, John Wright.
And in the wake of this winter storm, the city and others are urging people if they have to get on the road, to stick to major roadways.
“I would be a little leery of, you know, getting off the beaten path. You don’t want to get into an area deep snow and get stuck,” says Wright.
The City of Cambridge will be in a snow emergency through Monday, the 26th.
