Education Secretary McMahon Visits Maple Elementary

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Students  at Maple Elementary School in Cambridge were treated to a very special assembly Monday morning, as the school was chosen by the U.S. Department of Education to take part in the nationwide History Rocks tour.

Students were greeted by local leaders, their principal and members of the Dorchester County Board of Education. Congressman, Andy Harris, and United States Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon were on hand for the Education Secretary’s 50 state History Rocks Tour.

Secretary McMahon tells WMDT, “We like to focus, you know, on accomplishments. And, and I think it’s so fun as we looked out over this audience today and saw how involved the students were and their knowledge, also, I think they did incredibly well. So we want to we want to feature that…”

Maple elementary was the school chosen to represent Maryland on McMahon’s Tour.

And Dorchester County Public Schools’ Supervisor, Donald Boyd says it means so much for the school system…as evidenced by the enthusiasm of Maple Elementary’s fourth and fifth grade students.

“I think it’s going to be a great motivator. As you can see, our students were engaged from the beginning to the end, and it will show them that anything is possible,” says Boyd.

Being able to represent the state of Maryland at a national level also signals that the school system is progressing in their “23 No More” campaign to raise themselves in Maryland’s rankings.

Congressman Harris says, “So when they get ready to take their exams, their local exams, and they’re taking their state exams, they will remember this experience…”

And for students at Maple Elementary, being selected by the Department of Education shows things are starting to turn the corner in Dorchester County.
