Student Brings Knife to Laurel High School
LAUREL, Del. – The Laurel School District has alerted families after a student brought a knife to the high school on Thursday morning.
On a message posted to social media, Superintendent Dr. Shawn Larrimore stated that an altercation between students occurred before the school day started. Students that arrive to the building by bus are held in the gymnasium prior to going through metal detectors. While being held in the gym, a fight broke out, and one student produced a knife.
Dr. Larrimore says that staff, constables, and school resource officer responded immediately and quickly contained the situation.
One student attempted to break up an altercation and sustained a minor cut above the knee. They were treated on-site by medical staff. No other injuries were reported.
The student who produced the knife was immediately removed from the area, secured by law enforcement, and is now in custody. Officials say the incident is being addressed according to district policy and law enforcement procedures.
“We understand that situations like this can cause great concern. Please know that maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students remains our highest priority, and we will continue to act swiftly and decisively whenever the safety of our students or staff is at risk,” the statement read.
