The Brightside: Meet Mr. Timmons, the man who’s driven 4 million miles
SALISBURY, Md. – It’s a job that feeds 77-year-old Robert Timmons’s soul and helps feed America.
For 45 years, he’s been trucking across the U.S., delivering chicken for Perdue.
“I’ve been to Iowa, Boston, Connecticut, all out in North Carolina, South Carolina, Maine, so I’ve been just about everywhere,” said Robert.
In those 45 years, Mr. Timmons has clocked 4 million safe miles behind the wheel. While the veteran said driving is practically second nature to him, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t stay vigilant.
“It’s very, very dangerous,” said Mr. Timmons. “They think driving their truck is very easy, but it’s not. You’ve got to look out for other people, and you’ve got to be safe yourself.”
But for Mr. Timmons it’s not just a job, but a dedication to a service that touches the lives of people across the map. He said that’s what keeps him in the driver’s seat.
“If it wasn’t for our trucks, you wouldn’t have no gas to run up and down the road, you wouldn’t have no groceries in the stores, so that’s the reason why we have to have trucks,” said Mr. Timmons.
Ask Mr. Timmons if he plans to drive another million miles and he’ll laugh the question off. But with his dedication, who knows? It just might be in the cards.
“It takes about 10 years to get a million miles, so I don’t think I’m going to make it that long,” said Mr. Timmons.
