The MSFA organizes long-standing firefighter parade in Ocean City
OCEAN CITY, Md. – The Maryland State Firemen’s Association held a convention that culminated in a parade through the resort town.
The event drew tourists and residents alike. For firefighters across the state, the weekend carries deep meaning for them and their families.
The parade began on Baltimore Avenue between 16th and 30th streets, with spectators, family members and friends showing their support. Ryan Whittington, who works with the Ocean City Fire Department, said the parade is part of a long-standing celebration of first responders.
“It’s a rich tradition, and it used to start at the inlet and travel north,” Whittington said. “It’s about 16 blocks now, but the number of folks that pack those blocks, with their kids, their lawn chairs, their animals – they enjoy it.”
The celebration drew fire stations and companies from across the state. Michael Blake, a volunteer in Baltimore County, said he has participated in the parade since childhood.
“I’m from Baltimore County, Maryland, along with this engine here. I’ve been doing this since I was 5,” Blake said.
Like Blake, Whittington has spent most of his life in public safety. He said childhood memories of the parade remain a significant part of his life.
“You would sit and watch all the fire trucks, and now that I think about it, all the fire trucks look the same,” he said. “But there’s something special for kids to experience – and even for older adults to see the fire service from across the state of Maryland come together.”
The event is meaningful for family members as well. Joann Wheeley, an Easton resident, has made it a tradition to support firefighters.
“We’re enjoying the parade, which we do almost every year,” Wheeley said. “My partner is a retired fire chief and a lifetime member of the Easton Volunteer Fire Department.”
