Lawmakers working to advance bill that would deny pensions to educators convicted of child abuse

DOVER, Del. – In Delaware, lawmakers are working to advance a bill that would deny pensions to educators and school staff convicted of child abuse.

Wednesday, the legislation received enough signatures for it to pass committee and be heard on the house floor.

The bill has received bipartisan support from both sides of the aisle, as well as support from the Senate.

“It’ll be the first time that Delawareans stand up and say that we are not going to allow for sexual predators to be in the classroom and if they are we’re not going to allow them to live on their paychecks after they get out of prison,” said Sen. Bryan Shupe, the bill’s primary sponsor.

Rep. Shupe is hoping to introduce a series of bills like this one, saying he’d like to extend this beyond educators to all state employees next year.
