Dr. Monique Wheatley-Phillip is a finalist to be next Worcester County Public Schools Superintendent
WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – Worcester County Public Schools is looking for a new superintendent, and held a question-and-answer event for candidate Dr. Monique Wheatley-Phillip.
This is part of ‘Day of the District’, where finalists have round-table meetings with officials and stakeholders. Dr. Monique Wheatley-Phillip is excited to impact the county. “The decision I made to step into the superintendency at this point in my life, it really is the right time.”
After the retirement of Superintendent Lou Taylor, who announced he would not seek another term after 41 years of service. The Board of Education began its search process, and it has come down to 2 finalists for the top admin position.
Those candidates are Dr. Monique Wheatley-Phillip and Dr. Annette Wallace.
“I was a finalist for the superintendency in Cecil County, and after going through that process, I spent some time in self-reflection. And I realized that while I had a ton of instructional experience, what I needed was experience on the operational side,” said Dr. Wheatley-Phillip.
Dr. Wheatley-Phillip has over 30 years of experience in education. A few years earlier, she was a finalist for that Cecil County position, but didn’t get it. But, she shared with WMDT that she used the challenges to identify areas for growth.
For over 17 years, Dr. Wheatley-Phillip has been a classroom and resource teacher, also supervising principals in various communities. She vows to create a strong school system for stakeholders. Focusing on collaboration and data analytics, the candidate stated these approaches have successfully narrowed achievement gaps and improved student outcomes in other school districts.
“It starts with a common vision, and it starts with a common mission in terms of who we are as a school system. That tagline here is ‘We Are Worcester,’ and that means we are one team; we are one family.”
WMDT will meet with the other finalist – Dr. Annette Wallace.
