The Brightside: Gals That Give
DELAWARE – If you’re wondering how many women it takes to make a change in the community, one local non-profit says it takes as many as possible.
Over the past decade, Gals That Give has become a space for women who want to give back in the name of philanthropy.
“We partner every month with a non-profit that’s local to Delaware in Kent and Sussex County. We host dinners where women get the opportunity to check a couple of boxes, you get to be philanthropic, you get to do so affordably, and then you get to have your girls’ night out.”
It’s more than just a girl’s night out, though. It’s a bigger opportunity for local charities.
“We provide an opportunity for the charity to get up in this room full of women who are energetic and share a mission and a passion of giving back in our communities, and they get to talk about the work that they’ve done. So just sort of hearing those stories of connection of how people are impacted by the charity of the month, really drives that passion in the room.”
According to Founder Kim Wilson, what started out as a group of women in Kent County looking for more ways to plug into their communities has grown into a bigger mission to shine a light on the work being done in the First State to help people through all walks of life. Over the course of 11 years, they’ve raised over $480,000, which has stayed local.
“There are a lot of smaller non-profits doing pretty incredible work in our community and we’ve had the opportunity to partner with a lot of them, and elevate that cause and that’s been really awesome for them and for us.”
Kim says as a mother of two, she and many other women in the organization also have a mission to be a role model for the younger generation.
“Kids model what they see and they see that their moms and other women who they respect in the community that are teachers, they’re pediatricians, they’re dentists. I think a lot of women that are in the Do Good community feel that way, they’re doing it not only for themselves, but they’re setting a shining example and it’s really incredible.”
And with their social media hashtag “do good”, they want their efforts and work to be infectious and intentional.
“These women, they show up and they show up to do good, and they commit when they do that. I think we all believe that we’re better when we lift each other up and that, especially as women is important to be modeled.”
The organization’s first event of 2025 is set for Thursday, March 6th at Bally’s Dover Casino Resort from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and close this Thursday, February 27th. The organization will be partnering with Read Aloud Delaware, which helps set children on the road to literacy success.
