Discover Delmarva: Rehoboth Art League
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — Just a few minutes from downtown Rehoboth Beach, you’ll find a historic homestead and garden that now houses the Rehoboth Art League. Nick Serratore, the Exhibitions Director, gave WMDT a tour of the grounds and explained the art league’s mission: “The Rehoboth Art League is a non-profit organization that is 87 years old that encompasses everything that is art.”
The Art League is currently housed in one of the oldest buildings in Rehoboth. This homestead has been used for hundreds of years to let people express their passion for art. “We have a house on our property called the homestead- The Peter Marsh homestead. It was built by a gentleman named Peter Marsh and dates back to 1743.” Louise and Wilbur Corkran eventually bought the property. They eventually donated the homestead to the art league and established a gorgeous garden behind the 18th-century house.
Walking from the main building you’ll find one of the main galleries for the art league. “As a member, you can showcase your art here on a year-round basis. We have the member sales gallery, and it allows artists to showcase their work.” Galleries are more exclusive with whose work is on display. An Art League allows everyone who is a member the opportunity to have their work on display and for sale no matter the skill level.
Serratore says they deal with a wide range of skills “We deal with artists of all abilities. You know- whether you’re a hobbyist, or you’re just starting, or if you’re an established professional.” With members varying abilities, this leads to a multitude of mediums their 500-plus members chose to pursue. “When you come here you’re going to see art that is constructed ceramics, fine art, glass, pottery, jewelry is a big thing down here.”
In the gallery, you have everything- with an assortment of styles and materials used to curate these one-of-a-kind pieces. None of these pieces can be found in-store or online with same-day shipping. Serratore says you never know what’s going to walk through the door “We have a lot of variety and it’s really interesting to see what they’re going to bring everyone thinks differently.” The pieces all range in size from small shell art- to large abstract paintings. The art league also serves as an education medium for aspiring artists and hobbyists.
They offer a variety of classes from painting, wheel throwing, or if you just want to learn how to draw. Serratore says they also offer summer camps with registration opening on February 21st.
The Art League also hosts a variety of events throughout the year with the Rehoboth Arts Festival next up in May. Their hours are ten to four Monday through Saturday and 12 to four on Sunday.
