“Just shocking”: Family friend reacts to Luigi Mangione’s alleged involvement in United Healthcare CEO’s murder

MARYLAND. – Luigi Mangione quickly became a household name after the 26-year-old was arrested for his alleged murder of United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson.

The Mangione’s run a prominent real estate business in Maryland and are the owners of WCBM radio, where local criminal defense attorney, Tom Maronick used to work.

“In Baltimore County, the Mangione’s have a very deeply respected name, kind of like some of the esteemed families in Worcester County and the lower shore,” Maronick said. “They’re very active in the charitable community, they treated everybody at WCBM like members of their family, they have established an incredible portfolio of real estate.”

Maronick told WMDT he was shocked when Mangione was identified as the suspect.

Tuesday, the family released a statement, stating in part quote, “…Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” A response that Maronick said he expected.

“I think they want to keep the focus on a grieving family and the loss of life,” Maronick said. “Obviously, this is a member of their family, so this has got to be extremely difficult. I have not had any personal conversations with them about this, but that’s what I can imagine from this statement.”

As the investigation continues to unfold, Maronick said based on his legal knowledge, he believes Mangione’s fate is entirely in the hands of the justice system.

“There’s a lot to suggest guilt in this, but that being said, I think that there could be a not criminally responsibly plea that ultimately surfaces; that’s not out of the realm of possibilities,” Maronick said.
