Freedom Fund Gala
Salisbury, Md. – The 19th annual Freedom Fund Gala was held at Salisbury University to acknowledge the work being done to uplift the Black Community. The Wicomico County NAACP hosted their Freedom Fundraising Gala to highlight the hard work many members put into the community year-round.
A night filled with song, food, and Black excellence. Chapter President Monica Brooks says events like this are needed to uplift the Black community. “There’s so many people that literally keep their head down, and just work and serve. And we want those people to know that we see them… Even though they’re not doing it for accolades, we just want them to hear someone say, Thank you. We’re Proud of You. We appreciate you.”
Among those who were honored for their work in the Black Community was Restaurant Owner Vicente Hernandez who says he’s simply just doing his part. “I own a business called Together Cafe in Salisbury, Maryland. We feed the homeless, we work with the Boys & Girls Club. We do anything we can get our hands on, just to help somebody in need. Our whole goal is to make sure that people feel loved, they feel like they’re a part of a community.”
Brooks says shinning the light on the positive help communities move forward. “It’s far too easy to focus on negative. and far too often, people of color are targeted with the negative only, and when we’re doing positive things which is majority of the time, it’s not always shown, so we take the opportunity to put it out there.”
The Wicomico County NAACP will be hosting a screening of the movie 13th which addresses mass incarceration on Wednesday, November 13th at Wor-Wic Community College. Event starts at 6:00 pm. If you are interested in joining the 7028 branch, please visit their website.
