Chicken Charity
Milford, De. – Chicken is being used for charity! Perdue Farms donated 40,000 pounds of chicken to the Food Bank of Delaware, Wednesday, September 25th.
Every year Perdue donates hundreds of thousands of chickens to food banks across the eastern shore as part of a long-standing partnership. All chicken donated was non- antibiotic, and the Milford Facility Director of Operations for Purdue Foods, Edgardo Torres says their goal today was to help those who can’t afford to help themselves. “We basically donated 400,000 pounds of protein along the east coast to 10 different food banks… One out of 7 Delawareans suffer from food insecurity. And i think that we as a company, have the ability, as being a food company, we have the ability to help with that.”
Founded by Feeding American in 2008, September is Hunger Action Month, a national awareness campaign to combat food insecurity. Kim Turner is the Vice President of Communications for the Food Bank of Delaware. She says Perdue also donated $25,000 so they can feed hungry children through their backpack program. “We partner with schools and childcares up and down the state. Teachers, counselors, school nurses, they’re identifying children who may be at risk of hunger over the weekend… We’ll make these chickens available to our food partners, our food panty partners, we’ll also distribute them out to the community through our onsite healthy pantry center that we have in Milford.”
Perdue is investing $140,000 to alleviate food insecurity along the shore, as part of a larger initiative. For more information on their donations, visit their website. The Food Bank of Delaware says they also have a mobile pantry that goes out into underserved communities and delivers food, and if you need more information, please visit their website.
