MSP warns drivers to avoid stopping on exit ramps for “panhandlers”

Maryland State Police are warning drivers to avoid stopping for people allegedly flagging down vehicles for help after several calls have been placed to the College Park Barrack.

The suspects are reportedly pretending their vehicle is broken, flagging down passing drivers on exit ramps, and begging for money.

Officials say these incidents are causing major traffic delays and even some crashes on the ramps.

So far, the incidents have occurred on the exit ramps in the area of Route 450, Annapolis Road and both the inner and outer loops of I-495.

According to the report, witnesses describe the panhandlers as diverse and working these scams using several different kinds of cars. In some cases, they are even asking to trade jewelry for cash.

Police believe similar types of scams have also happened in Baltimore and Harford Counties.

If you have any information regarding these incidents, contact the College Park Barrack at 301-345-3101 as investigations are continuing.
